A good doctor is a doctor that gives the patient what they want

In my work experience, one patient was complaining of muscle cramps and aches after working. He was diagnosed with ME and had been given the best suitable drug to treat this. He expected a drug to treat his cramps. However, all the doctor could say was take it easy with the work and work with the physio. He seemed shocked and upset that the doctor had said this and insisted that the physio would not work.
What is a doctor's role? To meet the patient's needs or to meet the needs of what they think the patient has? Does a doctor have to give something for what we are suffering from to be a good doctor?
